Kids these days need to read more. I was sitting in my reading class the other day and my teacher asked our class to write the last two books we read over the summer on an index card. Some kids had blank looks on their faces so she added, "...and if you didn't read at all over the summer, which I know is a majority of you, write 'none'."
How could kids not read over the summer?! I read 16 books in all. I love books! A lot of people in my grade think reading is boring. But I'm sure if they found a book they'd enjoy, they would read more often. Others say reading is stupid. Mmhmm... riiiight. Most kids who read probably do better in school. What are your thoughts on this subject?

The summer I turned 14 is when I would started reading a book a week or every other week. Reading keeps your mind strong and allows your imagination to run free! :D
Personally, I agree that this is an issue that teachers and parents should address. The children are our future. They need to expand their knowledge by reading some fantastic literature. Great topic, Maria!
I completely agree with you! Too many kids in our grade are hooked on technology like AIM and Wii and the TV. Nice post. =) I'm glad there's someone here that hasn't been sucked in by the technologic temptations of 2008. Hehe...
Thanks Nicole and Manda!
Sadly, I was one of those kids in school that didn't like to read but I owe alot of that to the type of books that my family (my mom and my Aunt) read while I grew up. Horror and Suspense. I tried reading Stephen King and a few other novels but, dang it, they were just too scary for me!
Now, if I'd known about romance and fantsy way back when, I would have been addicted. But I grew up hearing romances were nothing but 'smut'! And they were not worth the time to read or spend the money on.
So, thinking all there was to read was stuff like Steven King, I hated reading!
I think it's great that you love books at a young age, and it's great that your mom shares your love with you, and you can read and enjoy them together. Maybe not all of them but some of them!
Aww that's really too bad you had a limited selection of books to read. Thanks for visiting my blog!
Maria--believe me when I say, I know EXACTLY how you feel. My mom and kid sister used to bug me all the time since I "always had my nose in a book" (along with "NO BOOKS AT THE DINNER TABLE!" and "Theaaaaaa play with MEEEEEE!" whines). I used to be self conscious about it at school, especially when I was in my teens, but like you I realized that it is everyone else's loss!
And it's not just kids that don't read enough--one of my bosses at work scoffed the other day, "Ugh, who reads FICTION?!" Yeaaaaaaah. *insert eye rolling*
You got the right attitude, sister! Reading is where it's at :) And don't let anyone tell you differently.
(By the way, just catching up on your blog now--everything looks great!)
I'm an adult who has read books for most of my life. They have been my friends and my escape into other worlds and realities when mine wasn't so great. I guess that gives me a large bias on this topic.
I do not have children, but I do have nieces and nephews. I missed the chance with my older nieces and nephews, but now with the younger ones, I try my best to read to them, as well as other things, like baking.
I can only hope that by sharing books with them, as well as letting them see me read...they will pick up on the reading bug as well.
Thea & dd03,
Thanks for visiting! :D
Hiya Maria,
I am so happy to see your blog and know that you enjoy reading as much as I do. I started reading for fun when I was in Junior High many many years ago and have not stopped since.
There are no words to explain the experience of being drawn into a book and following the pages of adventure. You can do and being anything when you read, not to mention that it strengthens your mind and vocabulary.
Reading Rocks!!
